What are Elders, Pastors, and Deacons?

Elders oversee the ministry and resources of the church. In keeping with the principles set forth in Acts 6:1–6 and 1 Pet. 5:1–4, Elders devote their time to prayer, the ministry of the Word (by teaching and encouraging sound doctrine), and shepherding God’s flock. At LBC, we refer to our staff elders as Pastors, as the New Testament seems to use the two terms interchangeably. Pastors apply the ministry of an elder to specific fields of ministry.

Deacons oversee the logistical aspects of ministry, as described in 1 Tim. 3:8–13 and Acts 6:1–7. Deacons ensure that the sick, the sorrowing, the aged, and the feebleminded receive spiritual and physical comfort. They will minister the Word of God and administer funds as needed. The duty of caring for and maintaining the church’s properties, including all accommodations for public worship, belongs to the Deacons.

Elders and Deacons are elected by the congregation. LBC is an elder-led, congregationally-ruled church. While the elders and deacons make many decisions for the church, they do so under the congregation’s authority and blessing.
